Russia Reaffirms Non-Interference In Sri Lanka Presidential Election

Moscow Insists Its Ties With Colombo Are 'Purely Trade-Oriented'

Kremlin Denies Any Attempt to Influence Outcome of Vote

Moscow - Russia has reaffirmed its non-interference in the upcoming presidential election in Sri Lanka, insisting that its ties with Colombo are "purely trade-oriented." The Kremlin has repeatedly denied any attempt to influence the outcome of the vote, scheduled for November 16. In a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow said it "respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka" and "does not interfere in its internal affairs." The ministry added that Russia's relations with Sri Lanka are "based on mutual respect, equality, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs." The statement comes amid concerns raised by some Western countries about Russia's growing influence in Sri Lanka. In recent years, Russia has increased its economic and military cooperation with Colombo, including the sale of arms and the construction of a major oil refinery. However, Russia has denied any intention to use its influence to interfere in Sri Lanka's political affairs. The Kremlin has said that its relations with Colombo are "constructive and mutually beneficial" and that it does not seek to "impose its will on anyone." The Sri Lankan presidential election is expected to be closely contested between incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defense Minister Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Rajapaksa is seen as the more pro-Russia candidate, while Sirisena has taken a more cautious approach to relations with Moscow. The outcome of the election will be closely watched by Russia and other countries in the region. A Rajapaksa victory could strengthen Russia's foothold in Sri Lanka, while a Sirisena victory could lead to a more balanced approach to foreign relations.
