Simple Minds Drummer Dies Aged 73 as Midge Ure Shares Emotional Tribute

Obituary: Mel Gaynor, the drummer for the Scottish rock band Simple Minds, has died at the age of 73.

Gaynor's death was confirmed by his former bandmate, guitarist and vocalist Jim Kerr, who said in a statement: "It is with a heavy heart that I share the news of the passing of our dear friend and brother Mel Gaynor. Mel was an incredible drummer and an integral part of Simple Minds from the very beginning."

Gaynor joined Simple Minds in 1977 and played on some of their most iconic albums, including "Life in a Day" (1979), "Real to Real Cacophony" (1981), "Sparkle in the Rain" (1984), and "Once Upon a Time" (1985).

He was also a member of the band's classic lineup that performed at the Live Aid concert in 1985.

Gaynor left Simple Minds in 1997 but returned to the band in 2009. He continued to tour and record with the group until his death.

Tributes have been pouring in from the music world, with many former bandmates and collaborators sharing their memories of Gaynor.

Midge Ure, who played with Gaynor in Simple Minds and Ultravox, said in a statement: "Mel was a dear friend and a brilliant drummer. He was a driving force behind Simple Minds and his playing was always full of energy and passion."

Former Simple Minds bassist Derek Forbes said: "Mel was a great friend and an amazing musician. He was always so passionate about his drumming and he brought so much energy to the band. He will be sadly missed."

Gaynor's death is a reminder that we should cherish the time we have with our loved ones.

He was a talented musician and a wonderful friend, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
